During the quarantine in Honduras, authorities have received 31,480 re-ports of gender-based violence – though an existing issue in these commu

nities already, these numbers reflect an extreme spike following COVID-19.

We’ve worked with community volunteers and the country's leading media outlets, to help provide new and adapted reporting mechanisms for children or women who are victims of any kind of abuse within their homes or communities.

We have also activated the support and coordination of a network of over 200 male and female community volunteers helping share preventative and proactive information, establish new routes of communication and activate safety networks across 10 municipalities to combat gender-based violence.

Ecuador

Before COVID-19, Ecuador's economic situation had worsened because of the decrease in the price in oil, increased unemployment, and limitation in trade. Today, with the added challenges of COVID-19, the people of Ecuador are battling to make enough money to feed their families and survive.

We delivered food kits and hygiene supplies to 75,015 people across 322 communities and delivered cash grants to 2,250 migrants and refugees from sponsored communities to help them access vital resources.

Mali

In Mali, most people still don’t have the means to fight or protect them-selves from this pandemic, due to the high cost and scarce availability of face masks and sanitation supplies like soaps and hand gels. Many sponsored children and their families must decide between staying home to stay safe or leaving home to be able to feed their families.

100 hand washing facilities have already been established in communities, including stocking hand sanitizers, masks and soaps for community health centres and within key public traffic areas like markets to minimize the spread of COVID-19 for those who do not have the option to complete-ly and pro-actively isolate, helping empower them to continue their sources of livelihood, much more safely.

Cameroon

In Cameroon, the loss of income and economic security due to COVID-19 has the potential to increase sexual exploitation, early pregnancies and early and forced marriages for young adolescent girls.

Uganda

In Uganda, many communities don’t have the resources that can protect them from COVID-19. There are also severe food shortages due to lockdown, and malaria deaths are on the rise because people are not able to access overwhelmed health care units for typical services and needs.

We have installed 45 hand washing facilities and distributed 80 car-tons of hand washing soap, plus 100 litres of hand sanitizer along with supplies like thermometers, and personal protection gear. Collectively, these resources are helping prevent the spread of COVID-19 within remote communities, as well as free-up space in health care units to tackle pre-existing and exacerbating issues; this includes treatment for diseases like malaria or malnutrition support.

Kenya

Vulnerable households in Kenya are battling to meet their most basic needs because of COVID-19. During emergencies we see girls become even more at risk of rights violations, and current situations could result in more girls forced into early marriages, or result in them being sexually exploited in exchange for money or goods.

12,992 sponsored parents have been contacted and informed about the importance of child protection and re-enforcing it, particularly in emergencies. 600 girls have been reached with sanitary and menstrual products; 562 sponsored families were provided with cash transfers to help keep food on their tables. Additionally 1,546 people receive sanitizers, 1,000 people received masks and 396,828 people received hand washing supplies to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and its many negative ripple effects on children and their lives.

Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, 19.5 million children have limited or no access to education due to the pandemic. Additionally, 12,200 people have been affected by the Amphan Cyclone, destroying many homes and uprooting crops – making a difficult situation even more trying.

More than 6,800 sponsored children’s families have received cash support to access vital resources during the pandemic, while over 800 households affected by Cyclone Amphan were provided with essential support to get through the tragedy.

Vietnam

COVID-19 has done more than lockdown the economy in Vietnam, it has wiped away years of progress. Today schools have managed to reopen, but 40% of children still haven’t returned.

Vital supplies like thermometers and 2,000 face masks have been delivered to schools for “back-to-school” reintegration programs. Learning at home initiatives are also being supported for vulnerable families and children who are unable to return to school to ensure they can keep up their education and help stop progress setbacks.
