Corporations Celebrate International Day of the Girl

Plan International Canada is proud to partner with companies across the country that align with our values to empower and inspire girls to help advance gender equality. As part of International Day of the Girl, senior leaders and executives from multiple business sectors gave up their seat for the day to a promising young woman to help amplify our message and publicly demonstrate their commitment to diversity, inclusion and gender equality.


During the weeks leading up to International Day of the Girl, 7 BMO executives, including BMO CEO Darryl White, shared their role with Girl Ambassadors from Plan International Canada and Plan International US. The 7 youth (aged 17-21) stepped into the shoes of BMO leaders for a day, and gained hands-on experience contributing to business discussions, participating in meetings and interacting with stakeholders. This strong commitment from BMO boldly reinforces their commitment to gender equality in their workplace.

EY Canada is proud to participate in International Day of the Girl. CEO Jad Shimaly happily shared his role for the day with 15-year-old Girl Ambassador Elyssa. Their day included discussions with leaders and other key stakeholders at EY, giving Elyssa a firsthand look at what it takes to be a leader. By providing this experience, EY is making a bold statement in its commitment to seeing women in executive positions in the business world and in all walks of life.

Unilever Canada is a proud participant of the Girls Belong Here Program, celebrating International Day of the Girl. For the past two years, the President of Unilever Canada, Gary Wade, has shared his role for the day with a promising young woman who aspires to take on leadership roles. In 2018, Gary stepped down to allow Lillian to take on his job for the day. Through this experience, Unilever Canada is making a bold statement to continue their commitment to seeing women in executive positions and championing gender equality.

Plan International Canada is proud to partner with Unilever Canada on this initiative, as well as the Dove Self Esteem Program. To date, our work together has touched more than 200,000 young people’s lives to build confidence and self esteem, and empower them to reach their full potential.

In honour of International Day of the Girl, Walied Soliman, Chair of Norton Rose Fulbright shared his role for the day with 20-year-old Girl Ambassador, Maitland. She met with senior leaders within the firm and gained invaluable advice and insight to be empowered to become a leader herself and pursue the legal profession.

Andrea Stairs, General Manager, eBay Canada & Latin America, is thrilled to be participating in this year’s International Day of the Girl celebration. Rima, 23, took on the role of General Manager for the day, overseeing 26 markets across the Americas. She worked directly with eBay Canada to launch the Gifts of Hope sale on eBay — these gifts go to real projects in the communities where Plan International Canada works, and will benefit those on the ground in developing countries. eBay Canada is proud to join Plan International Canada as part of a global mass movement to amplify girls’ voices, advocate for their rights, and elevate their position in society.
