Earthquake in Syria

A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake has struck south-eastern Türkiye and northern Syria, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. Children, in particular, are at risk with no homes to return to, medical attention stretched, and supplies such as food and water becoming increasingly scarce. Emergency rescue teams are working tirelessly to save those in need, but they cannot do it alone.

Here’s why this earthquake is particularly dangerous:

• This was the most powerful earthquake to hit the region in over a century – and was soon followed by another quake of nearly the same scale (7.7 magnitude) along with dozens of seismic aftershocks.
• Many families have already been displaced up to 20 times and are now left with even fewer resources for their loved ones. Before this disaster, those living in affected areas like Northwest Syria had been facing extreme humanitarian turmoil like widespread poverty, a cholera outbreak and health facilities strained well beyond capacity.
• The winter season means risk of exposure to cold, heavy rains and snow.
• When homes and livelihoods are lost in crises, women and children face a greater risk of exploitation and abuse.
• Schools have been closed, halting children’s education.
