Two earthquakes. Seconds apart.

Children are facing the darkest moments of their young lives.

Damaging aftershocks keep coming, even as the full scale of the destruction is still emerging.

Two weeks after the twin earthquakes, more than 4,490 people have died, over 16,740 have been injured, and more than 17,900 people have been directly affected, with more than 1,000 aftershocks continuing to shake the region.

Families are still searching for loved ones. Many are waiting for news they may not receive for days.

And for thousands of children, everything familiar – home, school, routine – has disappeared overnight.

Girls are at heightened risk. In the days after disasters like this, existing inequalities deepen. Girls are more likely to be left on their own, exposed to violence and without the support they need to stay safe.

You can step in for a child today

Your support today can help a family find safe water and emergency shelter and help ensure children, especially girls, are not left alone in the days ahead.

Our response

Plan International Canada is responding as part of the Humanitarian Coalition, a group of 12 Canadian aid organizations working together to ensure that help reaches families faster and at greater scale.

Our partners are working with families right now, finding shelter, clean water, and safe places where children – especially girls – can be protected. “Families have lost almost everything,” reports Mike Boomer, head of mission for Cesvi. “Thousands are now living in the streets in makeshift shelters. Children are among the most affected; they’ve lost their sense of stability and routine. A comprehensive response is urgently needed – and it’s needed now.
