Plan International Canada calls for immediate release of students in suspected kidnappings in Kankara, Nigeria

TORONTO (December 16, 2020) – Plan International Canada is extremely concerned about the safety and wellbeing of students presumed kidnapped from the Government Boys Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State on 11 December.

The organization is calling for the immediate release of the boys, who are believed to have been taken by armed assailants.

“We condemn this act of extreme violence against innocent children and implore the Nigerian government to use all available resources to get these students home safely,” says Lindsay Glassco, President & CEO, Plan International Canada. “This attack was a gross violation of child rights as all children should be guaranteed a safe environment free of violence, including a safe space to receive an education.”

This latest attack follows the abduction of 276 girls from the Chibok Secondary School in Borno State in 2014 and 110 girls at the Government Girls' Science and Technical College. Dapchi, Yobe State in 2018.

Hussaini Abdu, Country Director at Plan International in Nigeria, said, “Following the two previous incidents and other occurrences of kidnap of students in boarding schools across the country, the Nigerian government by now should have put in place adequate security arrangements to ensure the safety of children learning and kept in the care of schools and education authorities everywhere in the country, especially in such locations susceptible to attacks by bandits and insurgents.”

Nigeria is one of 37 countries, which endorsed the Safe School Declaration on May 29th 2015 – a commitment to ensuring protection and continuation of education in conflict situations.

Globally, Plan International asks all states to endorse, implement and support the Safe Schools Declaration to ensure that all students and educators can learn and teach in safety. We call on the Government of Nigeria to step up its efforts to ensure the protection of all students and teachers from attacks on education.
