Canadian Relief Efforts for the Lebanon Crisis

In wake of the devastating explosion in Beirut on August 4, Plan International Canada is calling on Canadians to support relief efforts in whatever way they can. Plan International is working with partners in Lebanon to assess the damage and determine what is urgently needed for children, their families and communities.

TORONTO, August 8, 2020– Jessica Capasso, Plan International Canada’s Director of Emergencies and Humanitarian Assistance, said:

“In coordination with local partners and other humanitarian organizations in Lebanon, Plan International’s immediate priority is to make sure children and families are safe and have access to food and essential household and hygiene items. We are particularly concerned about the impact this disaster will have on children who have witnessed distressing images and suffered immense loss – the trauma of this experience may have longer-term effects on children’s wellbeing. Displaced adolescent girls who are now living in shared accommodation or may have been separated from their parents are particularly vulnerable to exploitation and gender-based violence.”

The Government of Canada has launched a dedicated Matching Fund for the Lebanon crisis. The Government of Canada will match every dollar donated by individuals to the Humanitarian Coalition and its members before August 24, up to a maximum of $2 million.

“We want to thank the Government of Canada for taking action to support the children, families and communities in Beirut that desperately need our help in the aftermath of this tragedy. We also want to thank the many Canadians who swiftly and generously donated to relief efforts these past few days. The people of Lebanon will still need our support in the difficult weeks and months ahead, so we are asking all Canadians who are able to donate to do so.”

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Plan International, a leading child rights and humanitarian organization, has been providing child protection and sexual and reproductive health services in Lebanon, supporting the Lebanese people, Syrian refugees and the communities hosting the significant refugee population. All of these programs remain operational.
