Stop the clock. Stop the Setback

COVID-19 continues to unravel decades of hard-fought progress for girls’ rights – and the longer they go without support, the worse it gets. Confinement to their homes, removal from education, disruption of social and protective networks, combined with decreased access to services, is setting back the progress of millions of girls in crisis. Every single minute, more are forced to quit school, to become child brides, to endure violence, to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM), or to have children while they are still children themselves. Help us stop the clock and Stop the Setback for girls, before it’s too late. You can help girls access the supports they need to take back control of their lives, go back to school, live free from violence and decide their own futures.

HOW YOUR DONATION CAN HELP STOP THE SETBACK

Boosting economic security & social protection for girls.

Increasingly, girls are being forced to marry because of added financial burdens caused by the pandemic. Everyday, 33,000 girls under 18 are forced into marriage, often to much older men. Your donation will help provide financial support to over 100,000 vulnerable households to overcome loss of livelihoods, increase financial independence and reduce the risk of child marriage.

Enabling girls to stay in school.

11.2 million girls and young women may drop out or not have access to school in 2021 due to the pandemic’s economic impact alone. Girls without education are three times more likely to be married before they’re 18. With your help, we will work to help girls in 50 countries to stay in school by working with teachers, parents, health care providers and community leaders to ensure children get the support they need during this crisis to harness their right to education.

Reducing gender-based violence & FGM.

Added social restrictions and isolation caused by lockdowns have pushed girls into crisis – increasing their risk of experiencing gender-based violence and female genital mutilation (FGM). In 2020, an estimated 4.1 million girls were likely to face FGM, due in part to the pandemic. With your donation we can enhance the safety of girls and young women by increasing protective services, such as training front line responders to help prevent, identify and report instances of violence, sexual exploitation, abuse, separation and distress.

Improving access to sexual & reproductive health resources.

Due to COVID-19, over 47 million women could lose access to contraception, leading to 7 million unintended pregnancies. Limited access to sexual and reproductive rights and services will increase teenage pregnancies: one of the leading causes of death for girls aged 15 to 19. Your donation will help us work with teachers, parents, health care providers & community leaders to ensure that adolescent girls and young women can continue to secure the health services and supplies they need during this crisis to decide their own futures

Providing clean water and improved sanitation.

For families living in overcrowded spaces with poor hygiene and sanitation, the results of the pandemic could be catastrophic. In emergency settings especially the health of millions of girls is at risk. 3 billion people lack hand washing facilities with water and soap at home, and 700 children die every day from diarrhea linked to unsafe water and sanitation. In schools, nearly 570 million children lack access to basic drinking water services. Your support will help us work with communities and governments to promote lifesaving information like hygiene practices. You will also help provide crucial infrastructure and essentials, such as hand washing facilities and hygiene kits filled with critical basics like soap and menstrual hygiene supplies.

COVID-19 is the biggest and most challenging health crisis the world has faced in recent history. But one year on from the first outbreak, we are seeing just how dangerous the ongoing impacts of the crisis have been for girls’ rights.

We know that in times of crisis, girls are more likely to experience gender-based violence, child marriage, early pregnancy, preventable diseases and a permanent end to their education. By donating today, you can help us stop the clock, and #StoptheSetback.
