Placing the health of women and girls in their hands

Women and adolescent girls have the right to decide if, to whom and when they want to get married, have children, how many children and what health facility they go to. But can they? For millions of them around the world, the answer is NO! Women and girls’ health and access to services can be determined by the men or other powerholders in their lives, whether it’s a parent, in-law or partner.

Lack of knowledge about sexual and reproductive health and rights, rigid disempowering gender norms and limited access to health facilities with skilled care are also barriers women and adolescent girls face. Through one community at a time, we’re putting the health of women and girls back in their own hands. Through our Strengthening Health Outcomes for Women and Children (SHOW) project, we’re working with community leaders, governments, women, men, adolescents and health care workers to remove barriers to health. We are also making progress towards gender equality by empowering women and girls.
