What is the birth story that needs to change?

Currently, 99% of all maternal deaths occur in developing countries. And globally, complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for girls aged 15–19. Rigid gender norms often deny women and girls their right to make decisions about their own health and that of their children. Plan International Canada is working with thousands of adolescents, women, men and healthcare workers to defy the social and cultural norms that limit women and girls from choosing whether they want to have children, when, how many, with whom and the spacing of their pregnancies.

We know our work around the world is helping improve the availability and accessibility of healthcare services and is making significant strides toward advancing gender equality – which benefits everyone. The goal of our #ChangetheBirthStory campaign is to inspire people in Canada to support this important work so that together we can continue to improve the health and well-being of women and girls around the world.
