Through our Strengthening Health Outcomes for Women and Children (SHOW) project we are changing the unequal power relations that keep women and girls from exercising their right to health. This gender transformative* health project is supported by the Government of Canada.
Why are adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights important?
Globally, complications related to pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for girls aged 15–19. And most of the maternal deaths (94%) occur in low and lower middle-income countries, like the ones in which the SHOW project is active.
The SHOW project is not just helping women and girls survive but it’s empowering them to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. Youth like Oumou are eager to lead change in their communities and when they are equipped with the knowledge needed to make it happen, they are unstoppable.
We are also engaging youth in Canada through our #ChangetheBirthStory campaign. The campaign helps shed a light on several key topics such as adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal and newborn health as well as gender equality.
Who does the SHOW project reach?
In the 5 project countries, we work with the entire community and engage community leaders, governments, women, men, adolescents and train health care workers. We also facilitate adolescent peer groups that provide training and a safe space to discuss topics like gender inequality, gender-based violence and child, early and forced marriage and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
