Supporting flood-affected families in Sierra Leone

Newly-launched Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund boosts Plan’s flood relief work

TORONTO, October 20, 2015 - Plan Canada welcomes a $375,000 emergency contribution through the Humanitarian Coalition’s newly-launched Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund (CHAF) to provide support to the people, especially the children, of flood-ravaged Sierra Leone. The CHAF is a unique Canadian humanitarian funding mechanism, managed by the Humanitarian Coalition and co-financed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFATD), the Humanitarian Coalition, and the coalition member agencies, including Plan Canada.

“Every day, people around the world are struggling with the devastation from a disaster or humanitarian emergency that almost no one outside their immediate area knows about,” says Safo Visha, Director of Emergencies for Plan Canada. “Just because these disasters don’t make headlines in global media doesn’t mean that people are not suffering. This much-needed money will help save lives by providing safe drinking water and shelter for hundreds of families.”

Since the ongoing torrential rains struck Sierra Leone in early September, Plan has been providing safe drinking water and hygiene kits, shelter materials, education supplies and improving protection for children and their families. “This injection of new funds through the CHAF bolsters Plan’s efforts and will enable us to expand our activities to more isolated areas,” Visha says.
