More Assistance Welcomed for Syrian Refugee Crisis

Plan International Canada pleased with Government’s commitment to more humanitarian aid

Toronto, ON, February 8, 2016 – Plan International Canada today welcomed the Government of Canada’s commitment to provide $840 million in humanitarian assistance and $270 million in long-term development aid to countries affected by the Syrian refugee crisis over the next three years.

“Plan International Canada, along with other humanitarian organization, has for some time called for the international community to address the critical gap between humanitarian needs and the response from donor countries,” said Marie Staunton, Interim CEO of Plan International Canada. “Today’s announcement is an important signal that Canada is stepping up to play a greater role in supporting the vital health and safety needs of the most vulnerable refugees, especially adolescent girls and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.”

Plan International Canada is responding directly to the needs of Syrian refugees in Egypt, and is working through partners to provide assistance in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. The main focus of our response is children’s education, and providing safe spaces and support for their emotional needs. In collaboration with other members of the Humanitarian Coalition, Plan Canada supports efforts to boost humanitarian assistance to Syria’s neighbours, who have borne the brunt of the refugee crisis since the conflict began in March 2011.

“While immediate humanitarian aid is important, Canada must continue to support long-term relief and development efforts to educate Syrian refugee children and protect their rights,” Staunton added. “By doing so, we can prevent a ‘lost generation’ of young Syrians and ensure that the rights of young women and girls are protected during the crucial years of their development.”
