Plan Canada Welcomes Announcement on Global Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Summit

TORONTO, March 6, 2014 - Plan Canada welcomes Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s announcement of a global Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Summit, scheduled for May 28-30, 2014 in Toronto, Canada. The summit promises to bring experts, policy makers and leaders together to accelerate efforts to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths.

We applaud the Government’s continued determination to improve the global response to improving the health of the world’s women and children. “This summit is an opportunity to identify innovative ways to build on the success of the Muskoka Initiative, and to see that all women and children have access to live-saving services no matter where they live,” said Rosemary McCarney, President and CEO of Plan Canada. “Our sights are now set on reaching the hardest to reach,” she added.

As a member of the Canadian Network for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (CAN-MNCH), Plan welcomes the opportunity to work with our partners and with the Canadian government to make the event a success.

In 2010, Canada launched the Muskoka Initiative, which leveraged over $7 billion to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children in the world’s poorest countries. This reflects not only a wise investment, but also the values of millions of Canadians who support this important effort. As an implementing partner, Plan Canada has helped communities build clinics, train health care workers and invest in equipment and simple, life-saving interventions – vaccines, mosquito nets, rehydration fluids and common medications – to save the lives of millions of women and children around the world.
