Plan Canada partners with Shaw Media to launch Edmonton Challenge

Joint initiative calls on Edmontonians to aid the community of Volta, Ghana

TORONTO, April 20, 2015Plan Canada is pleased to announce a joint initiative with Shaw Media in support of the Edmonton Challenge – a Plan Canada awareness and call-to-action campaign asking Edmontonians to rally together and support the impoverished community of Volta, Ghana.

Plan Canada’s Volta Community Sponsorship aims to break the cycle of poverty for children and families in an area of Ghana where many people live on as little as $1 a day – and it’s working.

The project has been underway for the past three years, and with support from Canadian donations, has made good progress including establishing a new pre-school and community health post, stocking classrooms with books and supplies, providing clean drinking water, and training local residents in fishing and farming practices to help them build an income. Now Plan Canada is looking to reach even more children and families in Volta and calling on Edmontonians to take up this challenge.

The media partnership aims to build strong awareness in Edmonton and includes both on-air and online components, with Edmonton’s Seanna Collins featured in a 30-second PSA airing on Global Edmonton throughout the campaign. Seanna and a crew from Global Edmonton travelled to Volta, Ghana in February to meet with community members and see first-hand the significant impact donations can make.

“Community Sponsorship provides a holistic, multi-pronged approach to improving people’s lives including everything from clean water, to accessible health care, to basic education and income-building opportunities,” said Kristy Payne, Vice-President of Communications and Public Engagement at Plan Canada. “We’re excited to team up with Shaw Media on this and hope Edmontonians will join our call to reach even more people and make a difference in Ghana.”

Today, launches a special section to the site in support of this important project featuring weekly articles related to the cause. The articles complement on-air features set to air on Shaw TV Edmonton. Each of these features paired with each article focuses on an aspect of life in Volta, ranging from health care to education, providing Edmontonians a deeper understanding of the experiences and needs of this community.
