Plan International Canada welcomes Canada’s announcement to double funding for the Global Partnership for Education

Education funding needed for millions of girls currently out of school

TORONTO, January 25, 2018 – Girls’ rights and child protection organization Plan International Canada applauds Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement that the Government of Canada will provide $180 million to the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) for 2018-2020.

This decision comes at a critical time, as millions of children are currently out of school because of conflict and instability. Plan International Canada especially applauds the targeted support for girls’ education, as girls are 2.5 times more likely to be out of school than boys in times of crisis.

“Girls are inherently powerful and with an education, we know that they can change the world. The Canadian government’s announcement that it is doubling its contribution to the GPE replenishment fund is an important step forward in advancing gender equality and girls’ rights. We encourage Canada to continue to lead at the G7 this June, by ensuring that even the world’s most vulnerable girls can access quality education,” said Caroline Riseboro, President & CEO of Plan International Canada.

Plan International works with communities around the world to support girls’ education by providing equal access to education, developing gender-sensitive learning environments for girls, challenging gender roles and stereotypes, and providing girls with a learning environment that’s free of violence, abuse and bullying.
