Plan International Canada applauds Canada's new strategy to address gender-based violence

Protecting every girl’s right to learn, lead, decide and thrive free from violence

June 19, 2017 – Plan International Canada welcomes the Government of Canada’s launch of a national strategy to address gender-based violence that includes a focus on the specific needs of girls. Plan International Canada has long advocated for action to address violence against children, particularly girls, who are disproportionately affected by gender-based violence. The rights-based framework of the strategy, which includes funding for implementation, as well as the engagement of men in boys in challenging social and cultural norms that perpetuate violence in all its forms, sets up a strong foundation from which to deliver lasting, systemic and sustainable change.

Plan International Canada stands ready to collaborate with Minister Monsef and her department in implementing a successful strategy by working to prevent violence, support survivors and promote rehabilitation. In parallel with the new feminist foreign policy, this strategy positions Canada as a world leader in addressing gender-based violence both domestically and internationally.

Quotes from Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO of Plan International Canada:
“This strategy is a significant step toward ensuring a girl’s right to live without fear, so all girls have the chance to learn, lead, decide and thrive.”

Quotes from Amanda Sussman, Head of Policy for Plan International Canada:
“By addressing the specific needs and rights of girls, this national strategy provides a critical starting point for change. Plan International Canada is particularly pleased with the funding that focuses on child maltreatment and teen dating violence.”
