SPORTS ANCHOR

Martine Gaillard

Canadian Sports Anchor Martine Gaillard is no stranger to the challenges women can face in a career traditionally dominated by men. As an anchor on Sportsnet Central, the veteran broadcaster started out literally in a league of her own.

Growing up, I didn’t have many female sportscasters to look up to, so I didn’t really believe that I could do it. When I first started in the business I’d get asked if I really knew my stuff. And nearly 20 years later, people still question whether I ‘really like sports’ purely because I’m a woman. So, for me, being a Celebrated Ambassador is about showing girls that they can achieve any dream and encouraging them to continue challenging the gender expectations that dare to hold them back.

From small town Saskatchewan, Martine attended Toronto’s Ryerson University and worked summers in the Community Cruiser for CFQC Radio in Saskatoon. Later, she honed her on-air skills at The Weather Network, and for two seasons, moonlighted as the game host of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

That position led to being hired as the first female anchor at The Score. Now at Sportsnet, Martine has covered multiple World Series, MLB, NHL and all-star games, as well as the 2010 Vancouver Olympics – a career dream come true. The rest is female sportscaster history.
