Ecuador flagCountry Profile

Capital: Quito

Language: Spanish

Population: 16 million

Plan International started working in Ecuador in 1963, in the slum areas of the City of Guayaquil. Today, more than 400,000 children participate in our projects across Azuay, Cañar, Guayas, Bolívar, Manabí, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Loja, Los Ríos and Pichincha provinces.

We work in 1,000 communities, promoting rights and a decent life for children and their families.

Our main target groups are children and teenagers who live in situations of inequality and vulnerability, and whose rights are infringed, as well as workers with disabilities and other groups in need of special protection.

3 reasons why your support is so important in Ecuador

  • More than a ¼ of young people don’t go to secondary school
  • Many girls miss out on education because of domestic work and 22% of girls are married by 18
  • Over 50% of children are punished physically by their parents and at school thousands suffer from violence

How your support is helping Ecuador:

  • Working at local and national levels to help achieve greater access to quality education across the country.
  • Ensuring children under the age of 18 receive protection from all forms of violence, particularly by empowering children to understand their rights and stand up to abuse.
  • Empowering adolescent boys and girls to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights responsibly through the implementation of youth clubs and initiatives.
