Video: Plan staff documents Typhoon Haiyan as it strikes the Philippines
Words do this storm no justice
This shocking eyewitness footage of Typhoon Haiyan slamming into the Philippines was captured by Plan staff member, Nickson Gensis. Gensis had taken refuge from the storm on the second floor of a house less than a few hundred metres from sea. It was here where he witnessed the house next to him get washed away.
After weathering the storm, Gensis went to work, travelling around the area to assess the damage to villages. "I realized as I was taking notes while talking to people that I was shaking."
Since Typhoon Haiyan – one of the strongest storms on record – hit the Philippines, thousands of people have lost their lives and officials fear the death toll will continue to rise. Getting clean drinking water, food, medical supplies and shelter to children and families who survived the typhoon are our immediate priorities.
Plan’s emergency teams are on the ground and responding to the needs of children and families affected by the storm. Plan has worked in the Philippines for more than 50 years and we are doing everything we can to provide life-saving support like food, water, healthcare, shelter, sanitation and protection for vulnerable children and families.
