Plan Canada welcomes the Government of Canada’s funding contribution toward improving lives of vulnerable mothers and children
TORONTO, July 8, 2015 – Plan Canada gratefully acknowledges the contribution of $55.1 million from the Government of Canada in support of our work to save the lives of mothers and children. We believe strongly that improving the health of mothers, babies and children is a wise investment in the fight against global poverty, and this funding will help us to continue to make a difference.
The contribution announced today through DFATD’s Partnerships for Strengthening Maternal, Newborn and Child Health program will go to support Plan Canada’s SHOW project: Strengthening Health Outcomes for Women and Children.
Plan provides life-saving health care to mothers, newborns and children in some of the world’s most hard-to-reach communities. Through SHOW, Plan Canada will improve the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas of Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Bangladesh and Haiti, taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities. By providing training, medicine and medical supplies, and raising awareness about health services and practices – and building on the progress and proven results from past investments – we expect to be able to reach more women and children, as well as their broader communities. Decades of development experience have shown that when you focus on the most vulnerable, the resulting benefits accrue to families, communities, and entire nations.
“In much of the world, pregnancy and childbirth are full of risks for both the mother and her child. Canada has been a global leader in advancing maternal, newborn and child health, and we thank the Government of Canada for helping us to continue this work through today’s funding announcement. Investments made to date have been paying off as we are saving the lives of mothers and children; now it’s critical that we maintain momentum so that mothers and their children survive and thrive.” - Tanjina Mirza, Vice President, International Programs, Plan Canada
