Girls can change the world but they can't do it without you

In the poorest regions of the world, girls face double discrimination and unique barriers to survival and development, simply because they are girls. Yet they are the key to breaking the cycle of poverty for everyone.

For only $25, less than a $1 a day, you can and give girls the power to lift themselves and everyone around them out of poverty. Your donation is tax-deductible as a charitable gift.

Still have questions? Let us help!

What is the Because I am a Girl project?

Plan’s Because I am a Girl project focuses on providing women and girls in the poorest regions of the world with access to the most basic rights, ultimately transforming their lives. Your sponsorship will support projects in areas such as maternal health, microfinance, education and sanitation.

What countries are benefitting from the Because I am a Girl project?
Plan’s Because I am a Girl project is supporting many communities in multiple countries. Your sponsorship will help girls and women in countries such as Sudan, Sierra Leone, Niger, Colombia, Tanzania, Mali, Ethiopia, Ghana and Zimbabwe.
How is sponsoring a project different from sponsoring a child or community?
When you sponsor a project, you are supporting community-based projects that spread over multiple communities.

Instead of being introduced to a child or community members, you will learn about a specific issue through the eyes of many children and families in the communities where Plan works. Through quarterly updates you will learn about how your continued support is helping to change lives for children in multiple communities where the project is located.
Does my sponsorship benefit all the children in the communities where the project is located, or only some?
Your donation supports child-centred development projects designed to benefit everyone in the community. Our experts here, and in the 50 developing countries where Plan delivers programs, specialize in this type of development and ensure that collaboration with the communities and the community’s children is always a priority.
If I sponsor a project, how long of a commitment am I expected to make?

The length of your commitment is up to you. Many sponsors have been with us for years, which allows us to make long-term commitments to our partner communities.

Why can’t I sponsor a project that helps boys?
While our Because I am a Girl projects are designed to help girls claim the rights they are entitled to yet often denied, boys benefit too. If we build a school, boys also attend. If a mother is able to start a business, her sons will also benefit. If we educate youth about sexual and reproductive health, boys learn too. In fact, gender inequality and negative stereotypes are harmful to boys and men, too, which is why we include them in all our work. We want to ensure that girls and boys get access to education, health care, and the skills and opportunities needed to become independent adults who can break the cycle of poverty for themselves and all their children.

*In the event that money raised exceeds project requirements, funds will be used to support similar activities for children and communities in need and match ratios may change.
