Children are at the heart of everything we do in Barouéli, and with the implementation of key projects that are advancing healthcare, education, and respect for child rights, the children here are among the thousands in Barouéli who are getting a chance at a better life.

Djelika

Djelika

Before Plan came to Barouéli, difficult times for her family meant that Djelika often lost out on the chance to go to school. But today, she’s completing grade six with a love of mathematics that’s sure to support her dream of being a successful businesswoman one day.

"When I grow up, I want to be successful so I can help my mother and the other women in my village."

Sitan

Sitan is also back in school full time and completing grade six. Her favourite subjects are history and geography but, inspired by Plan’s many health initiatives, her dream is to one day be a nurse.

"I have participated in the hygiene and sanitation training and I have learned how important health is to every aspect of life. Even to learn well, we must first be healthy!"

Sekou

Sekou says what he likes best about Plan’s investment in his community is the chance it has given him to go to school, although he says he has witnessed many other positive changes too.

"Everyone is getting involved in community building. Men and women attend meetings about various topics and there are bricklayers currently working on the new primary school."

Korotimi

Third-grader Korotimi says she wants to be a doctor when she grows up but her great love at the moment is sports.

"I like these activities at school very much and my favourite thing to do in the village is to play under the big tree with my friends."

Sadio

Sadio

Like many kids in Barouéli, Sadio has many chores

"I clean up, pick up shea nuts, pound millet, sweep the compound, and wash clothes," she says. But now she also has time to play with friends and, most importantly, go to school, thanks to the changing norms around child rights since Plan started working with her community.

I love going to school and learning,” says Sadio, whose dream is to one day be a teacher.
