How to use this resource

Each section of the Teacher's Guide develops a topic presented in the video. Background is provided on each topic so that the teacher can guide discussion and identify areas of interest to students. In the "Background for the Teacher" sections. You will also find maps, a "Fast Facts" section and an activity for use on the Internet.

The activities that accompany the "Background for the Teacher" section allow students an opportunity to explore the issues individually and through group work. Skills developed include:

  • Appreciation and understanding of other cultures and diversity here at home
  • Public speaking skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to plan group projects and carry them through
  • Increased knowledge of the world around us and in our own backyard
  • Enhanced self-esteem and ability to make choices among different courses of action
  • Team work and research skills

The activities in each section relate to a variety of subject areas. Activities are printed black-on-white so that they can easily be photocopied for students. You may want to use each section as a part of a six-week study unit, or choose individual activities to satisfy curriculum requirements over the course of the year. "Extensions" provide additional ideas for follow-up activities that may be especially useful if students demonstrate a keen interest in a specific topic.

You may want to use discussion-based activities more than once during the year, to gauge the evolution of students' insights and the development of their analytical skills. Similarly, the video can be used more than once, to encourage students to re-examine their perceptions of young people in other cultures in light of the knowledge gained through participation in the "Kids Who Care" program.
