Fast facts

  • Riding camels can cover 160 km in one day. Racing camels can reach average speeds of 33 km per hour during 10 km races.

  • The fennec foxes in the Sahara desert are only 40 cm long. They have big ears that act like radiators, helping them to lose heat.

  • Camels have long eyelashes to keep sand out of their eyes. In a sandstorm, camels keep their eyes closed and are able to see well enough through their thin eyelids to keep moving.

  • According to the World Watch Institute, we lose some 24 million tons of top soil per year, and world losses over the last twenty years equal the amount of arable land in the States.*

  • Desertification affects more than 25 percent of the planet's total land area. 110 countries are currently affected. 90 of these are in the South.*
