Internet Activity

The Internet includes many science and nature sites. Start with a key environmental question, such as "What is biodiversity?" or "What kinds of animals can live in the desert?" and have students "map" their journey through the Internet. What links did they follow and which were useful? This will assist students in using the Internet to their advantage in the future, keeping track of favourite sites and successful search strategies.

The Internet is a good resource for maps. Have students locate maps of areas of natural desert on each continent. They can then research the issue of desertification and locate relevant maps of the areas affected by desertification and/or soil degradation. Have students access the United Nations website and monitor the progress being made (programs, States Signatories) on international conventions like the Convention to Combat Desertification.

Some key search words: desertification, desert, environment, desert life, desert animals.
