Effects of Desertification

When land is threatened by desertification, there can be many effects on people living in the area. There are approximately 900 million people in close to 110 countries affected by desertification, many of these people living in rural areas with low incomes and little land.

Crops fail and livestock begin to die of disease or starvation. Desert sands blow in the wind, covering homes and restricting movement. The land may be unable to support vegetation, threatening the community's food supply. With lack of food, poverty follows, leading some people to leave the community in search of a better life. Many choose to go to the city, but here they may only encounter overpopulation and fewer resources to be shared. By combating desertification, many of the problems associated with it - such as poverty and migration - can be reduced.
