The Earth is a single country, and all people are its citizens. We have to share this planet so don't be selfish.

What does it mean when a community cooperates?

The community is meant to be a place where members feel safe and secure. By working together, community members can help to make the community a better place to live.

In a small community, like a neighbourhood, cooperation means working together toward goals that address common concerns or problems. For example, when community members realize that cars are driving too quickly down their streets, they agree that this is dangerous for children in the neighbourhood who play there. Neighbourhood members may work together to help solve this problem by sending a petition around to all those who live in the neighbourhood asking that the city decrease the speed limit on the street. These people may also choose to write or call their city councillors to pressure them to support their proposal. Others may hold a rally to get people in the larger city community to join them in supporting the speed limit change.

Cooperation is not always easy. Sometimes members of a community may disagree on what they consider to be a problem and what should be done about it. On an international scale, the global community struggles with issues like acid rain, overfishing, war, disasters and poverty. Students will be able to think of many examples of issues or problems that could be resolved through greater cooperation and understanding - and a good deal of negotiation.

In order for people to participate effectively in their communities, they need to be respected and recognisd for their skills. Knowing yourself allows you to better participate in a larger group.
