Investing in local women
For development to take root, gender equality is essential. That’s why, with your sponsorship, we’ve been investing in Barouéli’s women.
Our Village Savings and Loans groups are a great example. They benefit everyone by empowering women, whose incomes and education levels are often far below those of men. With nearly 200 groups in place, women are now closing that gap by getting access to financial services and training in financial literacy and small-business management.
More than just fostering economic independence, these groups form a vital network for women to support one another and get access to knowledge and best practices in other vital areas, such as pregnancy and childbirth.
It’s a staggering fact that complications during pregnancy and childbirth is one of the leading causes of death among young women in developing countries, and it’s a tragedy that rocks families and increases the odds that children will not thrive or survive. To provide support and improve the odds, we have:
- Trained 151 community health workers on maternal and infant health.
- Organized community outreach initiatives aimed at educating over 5,500 local men and women on healthy pregnancy and childbirth basics, problems to look for and when to get help
- Held additional outreach and education initiatives with community leaders – including Chiefs, village counsellors, and religious leaders – to increase awareness of the importance of women’s health
- Conducted home visits to reach those are unable to attend community awareness and training sessions.
Investing in women is not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. Thanks to you, it’s a beginning in Barouéli that is leading to a better community, stronger families and healthier children with a better chance at life. Take a moment to meet some of those children and see our latest photos!
