Transforming the lives of preschoolers in Ghana, thanks to you!
When we began working in the community of Volta, Ghana, there was no place for children under the age of 5 to learn. Instead, they went to work with their parents or attended daycare in a makeshift shelter with no school supplies.
But today, thanks to the support of Canadians like you, Volta has a brand new preschool, complete with school supplies, an office, a kitchen and a new well for clean drinking water.
From start to finish, it was a community-led project. The people of Volta joined together to lay the foundation, build the walls and secure the roof. Everything down to the final paint job was a collective effort everyone can be proud of.
Something for everyone
“This is a big dream come true in the community,” explains Dzamah, Volta’s newest preschool teacher. “Now that parents see what a wonderful place we have, they are anxious to send them.”
Parents can now send their children to a safe, healthy place to kick-start their education, where they will flourish under the guidance of bright teachers just like Dzamah.
The new school benefits everyone – the community, parents, teachers and students.
The ripple effect in Volta
The impact goes beyond the preschool project. Through incredible collaboration, community members have helped contribute to their own development in a number of ways, like:
- Providing all manual labour for the construction of the new preschool
- Registering the births of 900 children to ensure all children in Volta have a birth certificate
- Forming community health committees, mother support groups and daddy clubs as a way to improve the health other mothers and their babies
- Forming a school management committee and parent teacher association to oversee the school’s ongoing maintenance, and to help promote student enrolment, attendance rates and performance.
