2015 Top 20 Under 20™ award recipient
Nivatha Balendra, 19
Recognizing the lack of environmental solutions for cleaning oil spills, Nivatha’s research involved novel species of bacteria she discovered and their effectiveness in the bioremediation of oil particles. For this research, she received the World Economic Forum Prize at the Intel International Science & Technology Fair to participate in the Forum in China, making her among the youngest participants in the world to have attended this conference. Nivatha led fellow students at her CEGEP on a mobile clinic trip to Lima, Peru to support local healthcare professionals. Nivatha was also the first student in Montreal to receive the full-fledged title as a Bharathanatyam (South Indian Classical Dance) teacher and founded the Laasya School of Bharathanatyam in September 2014.
